If you’ve been eyeing the xTool F1 and wondering “Can I really engrave stone with this?” — the answer is a big, bold YES! In this quick tutorial, I’m showing you exactly how to engrave a slate coaster using the xTool F1, my go-to laser for quick, clean, small-space projects.

Whether you’re new to laser engraving or just want to see the F1 in action, this project is beginner-friendly and gives impressive results.

🛠️ Step-by-Step: How to Engrave a Slate Coaster with the xTool F1

If you’re new to using the xTool F1 or just need a refresher, here’s exactly how I created this custom slate coaster from start to finish.

Step 1: Set Up Your xTool F1

Before anything, make sure your xTool F1 is powered on and connected to your computer. I like to give the machine a quick wipe-down and make sure there’s nothing on the workspace. The F1 doesn’t need a ton of room — it’s compact and portable, which makes it perfect for small spaces like my craft room corner.

Then, open up Creative Space, the free software that comes with xTool machines. This is where we’ll import the design and set everything up before engraving.

Step 2: Choose & Import Your Design

For this project, I chose a beautiful Mother’s Day SVG from Creative Fabrica — perfect for a quick, thoughtful gift.

To import:

  • Open a new project
  • Click “Image” and upload your SVG file
  • Use the grid and preview tool to scale and center the design

Or you can just drag and drop the file directly into xTool Creative Space

Step 3: Prepare the Slate Coaster

Wipe down your slate coaster with a dry cloth or paper towel to remove any dust or debris. You don’t need to apply any coating — slate engraves beautifully just as it is.

Place it in the center of your workspace. If you want to be extra precise, use a bit of masking tape on the edges to mark where your coaster should sit. This helps keep things aligned, especially if you’re batching multiple coasters.

Step 4: Focus & Frame with the xTool F1

One of the best features of the F1 is the live preview. Use the “Framing” option in Creative Space to project the outline of your design directly onto the coaster.

Double-check your positioning and adjust the coaster if needed. Then, set the focus of the laser — the F1 includes an easy pop-out ruler to help you find the correct height for slate.

Step 5: Choose the Right Settings

Slate is a stone material, so we’re going to use the diode laser on the F1. In Creative Space:

  • Set Power to 100%
  • Set Speed to around 12–15 mm/s
  • Use 1 Pass for a clean and crisp engraving

(⚠️ Your settings might vary slightly depending on your design’s thickness and detail — always do a small test first if possible.)

Step 6: Hit Start and Let It Work

Now the fun part! Hit that “Start” button and watch the F1 do its thing. The engraving should only take a few minutes, depending on your design size and detail.

You’ll see the laser etching into the slate — and if you’re anything like me, you’ll be lowkey obsessed with how professional it looks in real time.

Step 7: Clean and Admire Your Work

Once the engraving is done, gently wipe off the coaster with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. That’s it! No sealant or extra finishing required.

You now have a gorgeous, custom slate coaster made right at home with a compact laser engraver. Perfect for gifts, events, or even a mini business idea 👀

If you’ve brand new to using the xTool F1, here’s an unboxing and set up video to help you out.

  • It’s portable and doesn’t need a bulky setup
  • The laser preview helps position designs perfectly
  • Switches easily between infrared & diode for multiple materials
  • And it looks cute on your craft table 😍
