DIY Christmas Ornament Box

November 19, 2023

With the holidays fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about unique gift ideas for your loved ones. What could be more special than a handmade gift? In this blog post, we’re going to guide you through an exciting DIY project – making an ornament gift box using the Cricut and an SVG file from Creative Fabrica, along with Glitter Cardstock from The CraftPrint Shop. This customizable and embellished gift box can add a personal touch to your presents. Not only will it house your gift, but the box itself will also serve as a keepsake for the person you’re gifting it to. So, let’s dive into the step-by-step process.

Supplies Needed

Before we start, gather all the necessary supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Cardstock
  • Glitter Cardstock (I used silver glitter cardstock)
  • Ribbon (optional)
  • SVG file from Creative Fabrica
  • Cricut Machine (you can use an Exlpore, Maker, or the Venture if you choose)
  • Scoring stylus
  • Glue pen
  • Glue gun

What is Creative Fabrica?

Creative Fabrica is a monthly premium subscription service where users will get access to a library of fonts & graphics that they can use within their subscription limits. This subscription is aimed at hobbyists, professionals and agencies.

Getting Started: Select the Right Cardstock

The first thing you will need for this project is cardstock. This will form the primary structure of your ornament gift box. Select a cardstock color that matches the theme of your gift or the preferences of the person you are gifting to. You could even choose a cardstock with a pattern or texture for added effect.

Add Some Sparkle: The Role of Glitter Cardstock

Nothing says festive like a bit of glitter! Glitter cardstock will be used to add some sparkle to your ornament gift box. Choose a color that complements the cardstock you selected earlier. This glitter cardstock will be used for the ornament’s top, giving it a shiny, festive look.

Tie it Together: The Importance of Ribbon

Ribbon will be used to add the finishing touches to your ornament gift box. It can also be used to hang the ornament if you choose. The color and style of the ribbon should complement the rest of your materials. Satin, organza, grosgrain, or even a metallic ribbon can be used depending on your preference and the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for.

If you’re more of a visual person, then check out my YouTube tutorial for this project.

Customizing with an SVG File from Creative Fabrica

An SVG file from Creative Fabrica will be used to create the design for your ornament gift box. Creative Fabrica offers a variety of designs, but we will be using the Christmas Ornament box 80 MM ball jolly. Creative Fabrica. This design will be cut out using the Cricut machine and then applied to the cardstock to create the ornament gift box design.

Download the file and lets get to crafting.

Putting it All Together: The Cricut Machine

The Cricut machine is the tool that brings all of these materials together. This handy machine will cut out your selected design from the SVG file and apply it to your cardstock. The Cricut machine is easy to use, and it makes creating custom designs a breeze.

  • Go into Design Space and click on new project. This will take you to a blank Canvas.
  • Then on the lefts Side of the screen, click “Upload, then select “Upload Image”
  • Select “Browse” that’ll take you to your computers dowload section, you’ll choose the file that starts with svg score and click Open

You’ll be taken to a widow where you can change the name of the file if you like and add tags. The tags are used when you’re searching through your files in design space. So choose tags that describe this file. This is an option, you dont have to add tags. Then click “Upload.

Now your file is entered in Design Space. Select the file you just uploaded then click “Add to Canvas”

There’s just a few mores steps and we can start cutting.

  • Ungroup the file. At the top right you’ll see two squares next to each other with brackets around them. That the ungroup button. If you hover over it also, it’ll tell you what the icoc is for
  • Now you’re going to highlight all the green pieces ate attach them

The attach button is at the bottom right of the screen. This step attaches the score line to the box pieces and tells the machine to score on the box and not separately.

Don’t forget to highlight and attach this piece as well.

Now our last step is to change the lines on the box from cut lines to score lines. You’ll go to the layers panel and choose the cut lines and change them to score lines. You change them by choosing the layer you’re using then going to the top left. You will see the “Operation” drop down menu, click that then choose score. Repeat for each set of lines.

Now save your project by selecting save at the top right of the Canvas. You choose whatever name you’d like to save it as. Then choose the machine you’re using and send to cut.

With Cricut, when you send the project to cut it’ll separate the mats for you. So the glitter layer will be cut first, using 1 12/12 sheet. And for the plain cardstock, we’ll need 3 sheets of 12/12 cardstock. Choose the setting that’s the match to each paper. For glitter cardstock, that’s the setting and for the plain cardstock you can choose heavy cardstock.

Now that you have all your pieces cut, fold all of the score lines. You can use a folding bone or the cricut mini scraper.

Then glue the small folded pieced together. For the glitter circles, use a glue pen to put them on the boxes.

The glitter triangles will be glued to the top pieces. Make sure the glitter part is facing so they’re seen through the front.

The small fold will be pressed outward then thread the slits with the ribbon and you are all set to put your ornament in the box.

And that’s it! With these supplies and your Cricut machine, you can create a beautiful, custom ornament gift box that is sure to impress. Happy crafting!
