July is right around the corner, but this year the preparation for the 4th has been a little different. Theres people who plan on having a bbq, people who plan on staying home and continuing to practice social distancing, people who plan on joining a peaceful protest, and people who don’t plan on doing anything at all.
Regardless of your plans for the 4th of July, you definitely need something to wear. Look cute and make a statement in this D.I.Y. “Freedom for All” t-shirt. Its super easy to make, the file is free, and you can use any cutting machine of your choice.
Supplies Needed:
- Cutting machine & mat (Im using my Cricut Maker)
- t-shirt (Im using Gilden) purchased from a local shop named BK Design Cafe
- htv (Red, white, and blue) or your choice of colors.
- Weeding tool
- Easy Press or a Heat Press
- Mat
- Free “Freedom for All” svg file ** Down Here **
Step1
We’re going to start by getting the SVG file
Step 2
Upload the file to Design Space. Its an svg file so you don’t have to clean up the image. Just choose the name you want to save it under and select it then click “Insert Image”
Step 3
Now the the file is in Design space, you’ll see the layers panel on the right.
Ungroup the file (ungroup button is right above the layers)
Then we’ll attach the word that are on separate layer. For instance “Freedom” click on the layer that just has the “F” hold shift and click on the layer with “freedom” On the bottom right of your screen, select Attach.
Now we’ll repeat the same process for the word “All”
Select the layer with “A” then hold shift and select the layer with “ll” then select attach.
Now that we’ve done that, highlight the entire image and Group them back together.
Then change the width to 8 inches. (Im using a Medium sized shirt so you can make it a little smaller or larger depending on the size you’re using)
Now, save your project. And we’re ready to cut.
Choose the model machine you’re using and select “Make It”
Step 4
Next (and one of the most imoportant steps) MIRROR each layer.
The mirror Option is under each layer on the left side of the screen. This Mirror option will flip your image.
Make sure to mirror every layer. Then click on Continue.
Step 5
Once you’ve done that, its time to select the material youre using for your shirt.
If you’re using regular htv, then choose the “Everyday Iron-On” option.
Im using both htv and glitter htv. so I have to change the settings from Everyday iron-on to Glitter iron-on when I switch materials.
I used glitter iron-on for the Red and Blue Layer and regular iron-on for the white layer.
Step 6
Now its time to cut.
Place your htv shiny side down on your mat. Then load and cut all three layers.
Step 7
This is where the weeding tool comes in
Use it to help remove the excess htv, you only want to leave back the wording that we will be pressing to the shirt.
After you’re done, this is what you’ll be left with.
Step 8
Once you flip it over to be pressed to the shirt, you’ll see that its the right way.
And now we grab our mat, t-shirt and easy press.
When using any type of htv, its important to know what temperature to use and how long you should press.
There’s a Guide for that. Cricut has a Heat Guide for that.
You select the Machine you’re using, then the htv material, then base material, choose if you’re using an Easy Press Mat or a towel and click Apply
It will then tell you:
- what temperature to set it
- how much pressure you need
- if you should flip and press the back
- and if you can peel it hot or cool
Now that you’ve got your settings, turn on your Easy Press set it to 330 degrees, set 30 seconds on the timer, and lets get started.
Step 9
Place the mat down, then the t-shirt on top. I usually iron the shirt a little, to get out the wrinkles.
Then lay your design on the shirt exactly how you want it. Im an amauture and I made this t-shirt for myself so I did not measure, I just eyeballed it.
Step 10
Then lay your easy press on top of the design. (Wait until it gets to the temperature needed)
Give light pressure. Once the 30 seconds are up, flit the shirt and press the back for 15 seconds.
Step 11
Let it cool down for a few seconds then peel off the clear paper.
And there were have it. Our t-shirt is complete.
I’ve recently discovered a new found love for making t-shirts, so ill be doing them more often.
I hope you enjoyed this post and it was helpful to you. If you decide to make on as well, feel free to tag me on Instagram so I can share your work.
And as an added bonus, I’ve collaborated with a few other Amazing crafters to bring you 11 more free files to choose from. Now you’ll really be ready for the Fourth of July this year.
